When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,1Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ
“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”2Οἴδατε ὅτι μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας τὸ πάσχα γίνεται καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,3Τότε συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τοῦ λεγομένου Καϊάφα
and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.4καὶ συνεβουλεύσαντο ἵνα τὸν Ἰησοῦν δόλῳ κρατήσωσιν καὶ ἀποκτείνωσιν
But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”5ἔλεγον δέ Μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ ἵνα μὴ θόρυβος γένηται ἐν τῷ λαῷ
Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,6Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γενομένου ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ
a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.7προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου βαρυτίμου καὶ κατέχεεν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου
And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?8Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠγανάκτησαν λέγοντες Εἰς τί ἀπώλεια αὕτη
For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.”9ἐδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο πραθῆναι πολλοῦ καὶ δοθῆναι πτωχοῖς
But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.10Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί κόπους παρέχετε τῇ γυναικί ἔργον γὰρ καλὸν ἠργάσατο εἰς ἐμέ
For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.11πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial.12βαλοῦσα γὰρ αὕτη τὸ μύρον τοῦτο ἐπὶ τοῦ σώματός μου πρὸς τὸ ἐνταφιάσαι με ἐποίησεν
Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”13ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦτο ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ λαληθήσεται καὶ ἐποίησεν αὕτη εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς
Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests14Τότε πορευθεὶς εἷς τῶν δώδεκα λεγόμενος Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς
and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.15εἶπεν Τί θέλετέ μοι δοῦναι κἀγὼ ὑμῖν παραδώσω αὐτόν οἱ δὲ ἔστησαν αὐτῷ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια
And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.16καὶ ἀπὸ τότε ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν ἵνα αὐτὸν παραδῷ
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?”17Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχα
He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’”18 δὲ εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν πρὸς τὸν δεῖνα καὶ εἴπατε αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλος λέγει καιρός μου ἐγγύς ἐστιν πρὸς σὲ ποιῶ τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου
And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.19καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὡς συνέταξεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.20Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἀνέκειτο μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα μαθητῶν
And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”21καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με
And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?”22Καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἤρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς ἕκαστος Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριε
He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me.23 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἐμβάψας μετ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ τρυβλίῳ οὗτός με παραδώσει
The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”24 μὲν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται καλὸν ἦν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος
Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”25Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν εἶπεν Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι ῥαββί Λέγει αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶπας
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”26Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν Ἰησοῦς ἄρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν Λάβετε φάγετε τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you,27Καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.28τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ περὶ πολλῶν ἐκχυννόμενον εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν
I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”29λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπ’ ἄρτι ἐκ τούτου τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω μεθ’ ὑμῶν καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Πατρός μου
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.30Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’31Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πάντες ὑμεῖς σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ γέγραπται γάρ Πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα Καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα τῆς ποίμνης
But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”32Μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”33Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἐν σοί ἐγὼ οὐδέποτε σκανδαλισθήσομαι
Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”34Ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με
Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.35Λέγει αὐτῷ Πέτρος Κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι ὁμοίως καὶ πάντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.”36Τότε ἔρχεται μετ’ αὐτῶν Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανὶ καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως οὗ ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι
And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.37Καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν
Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”38τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Περίλυπός ἐστιν ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετ’ ἐμοῦ
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”39Καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων Πάτερ μου εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρελθάτω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλ’ ὡς σύ
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?40Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”41γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”42Πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων Πάτερ μου εἰ οὐ δύναται τοῦτο παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.43καὶ ἐλθὼν πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι
So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.44Καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν πάλιν
Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.45τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Καθεύδετε ‹τὸ› λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὥρα καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν
Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”46ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν παραδιδούς με
While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.47Καὶ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.”48 δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν κρατήσατε αὐτόν
And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him.49καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν Χαῖρε ῥαββί καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν
Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.50 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἑταῖρε ἐφ’ πάρει Τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν
And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.51καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς τῶν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπέσπασεν τὴν μάχαιραν αὐτοῦ καὶ πατάξας τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτίον
Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.52Τότε λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀπόστρεψον τὴν μάχαιράν σου εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀπολοῦνται
Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?53 δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν Πατέρα μου καὶ παραστήσει μοι ἄρτι πλείω δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων
But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”54πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι
At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.55Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με
But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.56Τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν Τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον
Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.57Οἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν
And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end.58 δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,59Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὅλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὅπως αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν
but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward60καὶ οὐχ εὗρον πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων Ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο
and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’”61εἶπαν Οὗτος ἔφη Δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν οἰκοδομῆσαι
And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”62Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”63 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα Καὶ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐξορκίζω σε κατὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἵνα ἡμῖν εἴπῃς εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”64Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Σὺ εἶπας πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπ’ ἄρτι ὄψεσθε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.65Τότε ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ λέγων Ἐβλασφήμησεν τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν βλασφημίαν
What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”66τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ Οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν Ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν
Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,67Τότε ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκολάφισαν αὐτόν οἱ δὲ ἐράπισαν
saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”68λέγοντες Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν Χριστέ τίς ἐστιν παίσας σε
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”69 δὲ Πέτρος ἐκάθητο ἔξω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ καὶ προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μία παιδίσκη λέγουσα Καὶ σὺ ἦσθα μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Γαλιλαίου
But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.”70 δὲ ἠρνήσατο ἔμπροσθεν πάντων λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα τί λέγεις
And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”71Ἐξελθόντα δὲ εἰς τὸν πυλῶνα εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἄλλη καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἐκεῖ Οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου
And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.”72Καὶ πάλιν ἠρνήσατο μετὰ ὅρκου ὅτι Οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον
After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.”73Μετὰ μικρὸν δὲ προσελθόντες οἱ ἑστῶτες εἶπον τῷ Πέτρῳ Ἀληθῶς καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ καὶ γὰρ λαλιά σου δῆλόν σε ποιεῖ
Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed.74Τότε ἤρξατο καταθεματίζειν καὶ ὀμνύειν ὅτι Οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον Καὶ εὐθέως* ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν
And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.75Καὶ ἐμνήσθη Πέτρος τοῦ ῥήματος Ἰησοῦ εἰρηκότος ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς
