1 When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death. 4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood, he said. “What is that to us? they replied. “You bear the responsibility. saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What <i>is that</i> to us? see thou <i>to that</i>. saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What <i>is that</i> to us? You shall see <i>to it</i> yourself!” “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”
5 So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and left; and he went away and hanged himself. So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them in the temple treasury, since it is money paid for blood.” The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
7 After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord had commanded me.” and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.” And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “<i>So</i> You are the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “<i>It is as</i> you say.” Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer. But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not offer any answer. 13 Then Pilate asked Him, Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You? Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?” Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”
14 But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement. But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. And <i>still</i> He did not answer him in regard to even a single charge, so the governor was greatly amazed. But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing. Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. Now at <i>that</i> feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. Now at <i>the Passover</i> Feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people <i>any</i> one prisoner whom they wanted. Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
16 At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him. Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him <i>a message,</i> saying, “<i>See that you have</i> nothing <i>to do</i> with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death. Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you? asked the governor. Barabbas, they replied. The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. And the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ? Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him! Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? <i>They</i> all say unto him, Let him be crucified. Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!” “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? asked Pilate. “What evil has He done? But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him! And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. But he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood, he said. “You bear the responsibility.” So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but <i>that</i> rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed <i>his</i> hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye <i>to it</i>. Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; you yourselves shall see.” When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children! And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” Then answered all the people, and said, His blood <i>be</i> on us, and on our children. And all the people replied, “His blood <i>shall be</i> on us and on our children!” All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”
26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified. Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered <i>him</i> to be crucified. Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band <i>of soldiers</i>. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole <i>Roman</i> cohort to Him. 30 Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly. And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
31 After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify <i>him</i>. 32 Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they compelled to carry His cross. As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull, And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).
34 they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it. they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 37 Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right hand and the other on His left. Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. At that time two rebels were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And those passing by were speaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads, Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads
40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross! and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest <i>it</i> in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. and saying, “You who <i>are going to</i> destroy the temple and rebuild <i>it</i> in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”
41 In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying, So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, Likewise also the chief priests mocking <i>him</i>, with the scribes and elders, said, In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking <i>Him</i> and saying, In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.
42 “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. HE HAS TRUSTED IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE <i>Him</i> now, IF HE TAKES PLEASURE IN HIM; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
44 In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him. And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. And the rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same <i>way.</i> In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LEMA SABAKTANEI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah. And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” Some of them that stood there, when they heard <i>that</i>, said, This <i>man</i> calleth for Elias. And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled <i>it</i> with vinegar, and put <i>it</i> on a reed, and gave him to drink. And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
49 But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.” But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. But the rest <i>of them</i> said, “Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.” The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51 At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
53 After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people. and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this was the Son of God. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. Now as for the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the <i>other</i> things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
55 And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.
