Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,1Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων
just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.2καθὼς παρέδοσαν ἡμῖν οἱ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς αὐτόπται καὶ ὑπηρέται γενόμενοι τοῦ λόγου
With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,3ἔδοξε κἀμοὶ παρηκολουθηκότι ἄνωθεν πᾶσιν ἀκριβῶς καθεξῆς σοι γράψαι κράτιστε Θεόφιλε
so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.4ἵνα ἐπιγνῷς περὶ ὧν κατηχήθης λόγων τὴν ἀσφάλειαν
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.5Ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἱερεύς τις ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά καὶ γυνὴ αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρών καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Ἐλισάβετ
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commands and decrees blamelessly.6ἦσαν δὲ δίκαιοι ἀμφότεροι ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ πορευόμενοι ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐντολαῖς καὶ δικαιώμασιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἄμεμπτοι
But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.7καὶ οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τέκνον καθότι ἦν Ἐλισάβετ στεῖρα καὶ ἀμφότεροι προβεβηκότες ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῶν ἦσαν
Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,8Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἱερατεύειν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ τάξει τῆς ἐφημερίας αὐτοῦ ἔναντι τοῦ Θεοῦ
he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.9κατὰ τὸ ἔθος τῆς ἱερατείας ἔλαχε τοῦ θυμιᾶσαι εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Κυρίου
And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.10καὶ πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ἦν τοῦ λαοῦ προσευχόμενον ἔξω τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ θυμιάματος
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.11Ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἑστὼς ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ θυμιάματος
When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.12καὶ ἐταράχθη Ζαχαρίας ἰδών καὶ φόβος ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.13Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἄγγελος Μὴ φοβοῦ Ζαχαρία διότι εἰσηκούσθη δέησίς σου καὶ γυνή σου Ἐλισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην
He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,14καὶ ἔσται χαρά σοι καὶ ἀγαλλίασις καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τῇ γενέσει αὐτοῦ χαρήσονται
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.15ἔσται γὰρ μέγας ἐνώπιον ‹τοῦ› Κυρίου καὶ οἶνον καὶ σίκερα οὐ μὴ πίῃ καὶ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου πλησθήσεται ἔτι ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτοῦ
He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.16καὶ πολλοὺς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐπιστρέψει ἐπὶ Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν αὐτῶν
And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."17καὶ αὐτὸς προελεύσεται ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα καὶ ἀπειθεῖς ἐν φρονήσει δικαίων ἑτοιμάσαι Κυρίῳ λαὸν κατεσκευασμένον
Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."18Καὶ εἶπεν Ζαχαρίας πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον Κατὰ τί γνώσομαι τοῦτο ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι πρεσβύτης καὶ γυνή μου προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῆς
The angel said to him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.19Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐγώ εἰμι Γαβριὴλ παρεστηκὼς ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἀπεστάλην λαλῆσαι πρὸς σὲ καὶ εὐαγγελίσασθαί σοι ταῦτα
And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time."20καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔσῃ σιωπῶν καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος λαλῆσαι ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας γένηται ταῦτα ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἐπίστευσας τοῖς λόγοις μου οἵτινες πληρωθήσονται εἰς τὸν καιρὸν αὐτῶν
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.21Καὶ ἦν λαὸς προσδοκῶν τὸν Ζαχαρίαν καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐν τῷ χρονίζειν ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτόν
When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.22ἐξελθὼν δὲ οὐκ ἐδύνατο λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν ὅτι ὀπτασίαν ἑώρακεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διανεύων αὐτοῖς καὶ διέμενεν κωφός
When his time of service was completed, he returned home.23καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τῆς λειτουργίας αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.24Μετὰ δὲ ταύτας τὰς ἡμέρας συνέλαβεν Ἐλισάβετ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ περιέκρυβεν ἑαυτὴν μῆνας πέντε λέγουσα
"The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."25ὅτι Οὕτως μοι πεποίηκεν Κύριος ἐν ἡμέραις αἷς ἐπεῖδεν ἀφελεῖν ὄνειδός μου ἐν ἀνθρώποις
In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,26Ἐν δὲ τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ ἀπεστάλη ἄγγελος Γαβριὴλ ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὄνομα Ναζαρὲθ
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.27πρὸς παρθένον ἐμνηστευμένην ἀνδρὶ ὄνομα Ἰωσὴφ ἐξ οἴκου Δαυὶδ καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς παρθένου Μαριάμ
The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."28καὶ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς αὐτὴν εἶπεν Χαῖρε κεχαριτωμένη Κύριος μετὰ σοῦ ⧼εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξίν⧽
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.29 δὲ ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ διεταράχθη καὶ διελογίζετο ποταπὸς εἴη ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος
But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.30καὶ εἶπεν ἄγγελος αὐτῇ Μὴ φοβοῦ Μαριάμ εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.31καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,32οὗτος ἔσται μέγας καὶ Υἱὸς Ὑψίστου κληθήσεται καὶ δώσει αὐτῷ Κύριος Θεὸς τὸν θρόνον Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ
and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end."33καὶ βασιλεύσει ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον Ἰακὼβ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας καὶ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔσται τέλος
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"34Εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον Πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.35Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῇ Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σέ καὶ δύναμις Ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται Υἱὸς Θεοῦ
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.36καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἐλισάβετ συγγενίς σου καὶ αὐτὴ συνείληφεν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ
For no word from God will ever fail."37ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ πᾶν ῥῆμα
"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.38Εἶπεν δὲ Μαριάμ Ἰδοὺ δούλη Κυρίου γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτῆς ἄγγελος
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,39Ἀναστᾶσα δὲ Μαριὰμ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν μετὰ σπουδῆς εἰς πόλιν Ἰούδα
where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.40καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ζαχαρίου καὶ ἠσπάσατο τὴν Ἐλισάβετ
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.41καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν τὸν ἀσπασμὸν τῆς Μαρίας Ἐλισάβετ ἐσκίρτησεν τὸ βρέφος ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπλήσθη Πνεύματος Ἁγίου Ἐλισάβετ
In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!42καὶ ἀνεφώνησεν κραυγῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπεν Εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξίν καὶ εὐλογημένος καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας σου
But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?43καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο ἵνα ἔλθῃ μήτηρ τοῦ Κυρίου μου πρὸς ἐμέ
As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.44ἰδοὺ γὰρ ὡς ἐγένετο φωνὴ τοῦ ἀσπασμοῦ σου εἰς τὰ ὦτά μου ἐσκίρτησεν ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει τὸ βρέφος ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!"45καὶ μακαρία πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ Κυρίου
And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord46Καὶ εἶπεν Μαριάμ Μεγαλύνει ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,47καὶ ἠγαλλίασεν τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ τῷ Σωτῆρί μου
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,48ὅτι ἐπέβλεψεν ἐπὶ τὴν ταπείνωσιν τῆς δούλης αὐτοῦ ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν μακαριοῦσίν με πᾶσαι αἱ γενεαί
for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name.49ὅτι ἐποίησέν μοι μεγάλα δυνατός καὶ ἅγιον τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ
His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.50καὶ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ εἰς γενεὰς καὶ γενεὰς τοῖς φοβουμένοις αὐτόν
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.51Ἐποίησεν κράτος ἐν βραχίονι αὐτοῦ διεσκόρπισεν ὑπερηφάνους διανοίᾳ καρδίας αὐτῶν
He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.52καθεῖλεν δυνάστας ἀπὸ θρόνων καὶ ὕψωσεν ταπεινούς
He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.53πεινῶντας ἐνέπλησεν ἀγαθῶν καὶ πλουτοῦντας ἐξαπέστειλεν κενούς
He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful54ἀντελάβετο Ἰσραὴλ παιδὸς αὐτοῦ μνησθῆναι ἐλέους
to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors."55καθὼς ἐλάλησεν πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν τῷ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.56Ἔμεινεν δὲ Μαριὰμ σὺν αὐτῇ ὡς μῆνας τρεῖς καὶ ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς
When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.57Τῇ δὲ Ἐλισάβετ ἐπλήσθη χρόνος τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱόν
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.58καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ περίοικοι καὶ οἱ συγγενεῖς αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν Κύριος τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτῆς καὶ συνέχαιρον αὐτῇ
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah,59Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ ἦλθον περιτεμεῖν τὸ παιδίον καὶ ἐκάλουν αὐτὸ ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ζαχαρίαν
but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John."60καὶ ἀποκριθεῖσα μήτηρ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Οὐχί ἀλλὰ κληθήσεται Ἰωάννης
They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that name."61Καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτὴν ὅτι Οὐδείς ἐστιν ἐκ τῆς συγγενείας σου ὃς καλεῖται τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ
Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.62ἐνένευον δὲ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ τί ἂν θέλοι καλεῖσθαι αὐτό
He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, "His name is John."63Καὶ αἰτήσας πινακίδιον ἔγραψεν λέγων Ἰωάννης ἐστὶν ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμασαν πάντες
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.64ἀνεῴχθη δὲ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ παραχρῆμα καὶ γλῶσσα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλει εὐλογῶν τὸν Θεόν
All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.65Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πάντας φόβος τοὺς περιοικοῦντας αὐτούς καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ὀρεινῇ τῆς Ἰουδαίας διελαλεῖτο πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα
Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, "What then is this child going to be?" For the Lord's hand was with him.66καὶ ἔθεντο πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῶν λέγοντες Τί ἄρα τὸ παιδίον τοῦτο ἔσται καὶ γὰρ χεὶρ Κυρίου ἦν μετ’ αὐτοῦ
His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:67Καὶ Ζαχαρίας πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐπλήσθη Πνεύματος Ἁγίου καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν λέγων
"Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.68Εὐλογητὸς Κύριος Θεὸς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ ὅτι ἐπεσκέψατο καὶ ἐποίησεν λύτρωσιν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David69καὶ ἤγειρεν κέρας σωτηρίας ἡμῖν ἐν οἴκῳ Δαυὶδ παιδὸς αὐτοῦ
(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),70καθὼς ἐλάλησεν διὰ στόματος τῶν ἁγίων ἀπ’ αἰῶνος προφητῶν αὐτοῦ
salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us--71σωτηρίαν ἐξ ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς πάντων τῶν μισούντων ἡμᾶς
to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant,72ποιῆσαι ἔλεος μετὰ τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν καὶ μνησθῆναι διαθήκης ἁγίας αὐτοῦ
the oath he swore to our father Abraham:73ὅρκον ὃν ὤμοσεν πρὸς Ἀβραὰμ τὸν πατέρα ἡμῶν τοῦ δοῦναι ἡμῖν
to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear74ἀφόβως ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν ῥυσθέντας λατρεύειν αὐτῷ
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.75ἐν ὁσιότητι καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ πάσαις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἡμῶν
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,76Καὶ σὺ δέ παιδίον προφήτης Ὑψίστου κληθήσῃ προπορεύσῃ γὰρ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου ἑτοιμάσαι ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ
to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,77τοῦ δοῦναι γνῶσιν σωτηρίας τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ ἐν ἀφέσει ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν
because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven78διὰ σπλάγχνα ἐλέους Θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐν οἷς ἐπισκέψεται ἡμᾶς ἀνατολὴ ἐξ ὕψους
to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace."79ἐπιφᾶναι τοῖς ἐν σκότει καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτου καθημένοις τοῦ κατευθῦναι τοὺς πόδας ἡμῶν εἰς ὁδὸν εἰρήνης
And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.80Τὸ δὲ παιδίον ηὔξανεν καὶ ἐκραταιοῦτο πνεύματι καὶ ἦν ἐν ταῖς ἐρήμοις ἕως ἡμέρας ἀναδείξεως αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν Ἰσραήλ
