When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death.1Πρωΐας δὲ γενομένης συμβούλιον ἔλαβον πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὥστε θανατῶσαι αὐτόν
They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.2καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι
When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.3Τότε ἰδὼν Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς* αὐτὸν ὅτι κατεκρίθη μεταμεληθεὶς ἔστρεψεν τὰ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ πρεσβυτέροις
“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What is that to us?” they replied. “You bear the responsibility.”4λέγων Ἥμαρτον παραδοὺς αἷμα ἀθῷον Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί πρὸς ἡμᾶς σὺ ὄψῃ
So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.5Καὶ ῥίψας τὰ ἀργύρια εἰς τὸν ναὸν ἀνεχώρησεν καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπήγξατο
The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, “It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”6Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς λαβόντες τὰ ἀργύρια εἶπαν Οὐκ ἔξεστιν βαλεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν κορβανᾶν ἐπεὶ τιμὴ αἵματός ἐστιν
After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.7συμβούλιον δὲ λαβόντες ἠγόρασαν ἐξ αὐτῶν τὸν ἀγρὸν τοῦ κεραμέως εἰς ταφὴν τοῖς ξένοις
That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.8διὸ ἐκλήθη ἀγρὸς ἐκεῖνος Ἀγρὸς αἵματος ἕως τῆς σήμερον
Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him by the people of Israel,9τότε ἐπληρώθη τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος Καὶ ἔλαβον τὰ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ τετιμημένου ὃν ἐτιμήσαντο ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ
and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord had commanded me.”10καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν τοῦ κεραμέως καθὰ συνέταξέν μοι Κύριος
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him: “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.11 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἡγεμὼν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.12Καὶ ἐν τῷ κατηγορεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο
Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?”13Τότε λέγει αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Οὐκ ἀκούεις πόσα σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.14Καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ πρὸς οὐδὲ ἓν ῥῆμα ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν ἡγεμόνα λίαν
Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing.15Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν εἰώθει ἡγεμὼν ἀπολύειν ἕνα τῷ ὄχλῳ δέσμιον ὃν ἤθελον
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.16εἶχον δὲ τότε δέσμιον ἐπίσημον λεγόμενον ‹Ἰησοῦν› Βαραββᾶν
So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”17συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ‹Ἰησοῦν τὸν› Βαραββᾶν Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν
For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.18ᾔδει γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παρέδωκαν αὐτόν
While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.”19Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν γυνὴ αὐτοῦ λέγουσα Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ τῷ δικαίῳ ἐκείνῳ πολλὰ γὰρ ἔπαθον σήμερον κατ’ ὄναρ δι’ αὐτόν
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.20Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἔπεισαν τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα αἰτήσωνται τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν ἀπολέσωσιν
“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they replied.21Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τίνα θέλετε ἀπὸ τῶν δύο ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τὸν Βαραββᾶν
“What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!”22Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τί οὖν ποιήσω Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν Λέγουσιν πάντες Σταυρωθήτω
“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”23 δὲ ἔφη Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραζον λέγοντες Σταυρωθήτω
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”24Ἰδὼν δὲ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ἀπέναντι* τοῦ ὄχλου λέγων Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τούτου ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε
All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”25Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πᾶς λαὸς εἶπεν Τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν
So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.26Τότε ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him.27Τότε οἱ στρατιῶται τοῦ ἡγεμόνος παραλαβόντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον συνήγαγον ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.28καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν χλαμύδα κοκκίνην περιέθηκαν αὐτῷ
And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt down before Him to mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”29καὶ πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ κάλαμον ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ καὶ γονυπετήσαντες ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly.30καὶ ἐμπτύσαντες εἰς αὐτὸν ἔλαβον τὸν κάλαμον καὶ ἔτυπτον εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ
After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.31Καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν χλαμύδα καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σταυρῶσαι
Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.32Ἐξερχόμενοι δὲ εὗρον ἄνθρωπον Κυρηναῖον ὀνόματι Σίμωνα τοῦτον ἠγγάρευσαν ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull,33Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Γολγοθᾶ ἐστιν κρανίου τόπος λεγόμενος
they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.34ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν
When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.35Σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον {ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ προφήτου Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον}
And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.36καὶ καθήμενοι ἐτήρουν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ
Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.37καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην ΟΥΤΟΣ* ΕΣΤΙΝ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right hand and the other on His left.38Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων
And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads39Οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”40καὶ λέγοντες καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν σῶσον σεαυτόν εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,41Ὁμοίως ‹καὶ› οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων ἔλεγον
“He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.42Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”43πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν Θεόν ῥυσάσθω νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι Υἱός
In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.44Τὸ δ’ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.45Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”46περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων Ἠλὶ* ἠλὶ* λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι* τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Θεέ μου θεέ μου ἵνα‿ τί με ἐγκατέλιπες
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.”47Τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος
One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.48καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν
But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”49Οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἔλεγον* Ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων αὐτόν (ἄλλος δὲ λαβὼν λόγχην ἔνυξεν αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευράν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὕδωρ καὶ αἷμα)
When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.50 δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα
At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.51Καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο καὶ γῆ ἐσείσθη καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν
The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.52καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα ἀνεῴχθησαν καὶ πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ἠγέρθησαν
After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.53καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”54 δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ γενόμενα* ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς ἦν οὗτος
And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.55Ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ γυναῖκες πολλαὶ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι αἵτινες ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας διακονοῦσαι αὐτῷ
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.56ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία Μαγδαληνή καὶ Μαρία τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.57Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἦλθεν ἄνθρωπος πλούσιος ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας τοὔνομα Ἰωσήφ ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἐμαθητεύθη τῷ Ἰησοῦ
He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.58οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τότε Πιλᾶτος ἐκέλευσεν ἀποδοθῆναι
So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,59καὶ λαβὼν τὸ σῶμα Ἰωσὴφ ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ ἐν σινδόνι καθαρᾷ
and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.60καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ καινῷ αὐτοῦ μνημείῳ ἐλατόμησεν ἐν τῇ πέτρᾳ καὶ προσκυλίσας λίθον μέγαν τῇ θύρᾳ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπῆλθεν
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.61Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ Μαριὰμ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἄλλη Μαρία καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου
The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.62Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἥτις ἐστὶν μετὰ τὴν Παρασκευήν συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς Πιλᾶτον
“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’63λέγοντες Κύριε ἐμνήσθημεν ὅτι ἐκεῖνος πλάνος εἶπεν ἔτι ζῶν Μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐγείρομαι
So give the order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last deception would be worse than the first.”64κέλευσον οὖν ἀσφαλισθῆναι τὸν τάφον ἕως τῆς τρίτης ἡμέρας μή‿ ποτε ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ‹αὐτοῦ› κλέψωσιν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴπωσιν τῷ λαῷ Ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ ἔσται ἐσχάτη πλάνη χείρων τῆς πρώτης
“You have a guard,” Pilate said. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”65Ἔφη αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Ἔχετε κουστωδίαν ὑπάγετε ἀσφαλίσασθε ὡς οἴδατε
So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.66οἱ δὲ πορευθέντες ἠσφαλίσαντο τὸν τάφον σφραγίσαντες τὸν λίθον μετὰ τῆς κουστωδίας
