1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near.

1Ἤγγιζεν δὲ ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων ἡ λεγομένη Πάσχα

2So the high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the crowd.

2καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τὸ πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν

3But Satan went into Judas called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve.

3Εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Σατανᾶς εἰς Ἰούδαν τὸν καλούμενον Ἰσκαριώτην ὄντα ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τῶν δώδεκα

4So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them.

4καὶ ἀπελθὼν συνελάλησεν τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ στρατηγοῖς τὸ πῶς αὐτοῖς παραδῷ αὐτόν

5They were delighted, and agreed to give him money.

5καὶ ἐχάρησαν καὶ συνέθεντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι

6Judas accepted their offer and began to look for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present.

6καὶ ἐξωμολόγησεν καὶ ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν τοῦ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν ἄτερ ὄχλου αὐτοῖς

7Then the day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed.

7Ἦλθεν δὲ ἡ ἡμέρα τῶν ἀζύμων [ἐν] ᾗ ἔδει θύεσθαι τὸ πάσχα

8So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal."

8καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην εἰπών Πορευθέντες ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν τὸ πάσχα ἵνα φάγωμεν

9They asked him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"

9Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμεν

10He told them, "Just after you go into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters

10Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ εἰσελθόντων ὑμῶν εἰς τὴν πόλιν συναντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἰς ἣν εἰσπορεύεται

11and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?"'

11καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας Λέγει σοι ὁ Διδάσκαλος Ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμα ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω

12Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished. Get things ready for us there."

12κἀκεῖνος ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνάγαιον μέγα ἐστρωμένον ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε

13So they went and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

13Ἀπελθόντες δὲ εὗρον καθὼς εἰρήκει αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα

14Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table, along with his apostles.

14Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡ ὥρα ἀνέπεσεν καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι σὺν αὐτῷ

15He told them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer,

15καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἐπεθύμησα τοῦτο τὸ πάσχα φαγεῖν μεθ’ ὑμῶν πρὸ τοῦ με παθεῖν

16because I tell all of you, I will never eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God."

16λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι 〈οὐκέτι〉 οὐ μὴ φάγω αὐτὸ ἕως ὅτου πληρωθῇ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ

17Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves,

17Καὶ δεξάμενος ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας εἶπεν Λάβετε τοῦτο καὶ διαμερίσατε εἰς ἑαυτούς

18because I tell you, from now on I will never drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

18λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν [ὅτι] οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ

19Then he took a loaf of bread, gave thanks, broke it in pieces, and handed it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Keep on doing this in memory of me."

19Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν

20He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant sealed by my blood, which is being poured out for you.

20καὶ τὸ ποτήριον ὡσαύτως μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αἵματί μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐκχυννόμενον

21Yet look! The hand of the man who is betraying me is with me on the table!

21Πλὴν ἰδοὺ ἡ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης

22The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!"

22ὅτι ὁ Υἱὸς μὲν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον πορεύεται πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ παραδίδοται

23Then they began to discuss among themselves which one of them was going to do this.

23Καὶ αὐτοὶ ἤρξαντο συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς τὸ τίς ἄρα εἴη ἐξ αὐτῶν ὁ τοῦτο μέλλων πράσσειν

24Now an argument sprang up among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

24Ἐγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς τὸ τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων

25But he told them, "The kings of the unbelievers lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.

25ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν κυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐξουσιάζοντες αὐτῶν εὐεργέται καλοῦνται

26But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you should become like the youngest, and the one who leads should become like the one who serves.

26ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἀλλ’ ὁ μείζων ἐν ὑμῖν γινέσθω ὡς ὁ νεώτερος καὶ ὁ ἡγούμενος ὡς ὁ διακονῶν

27Because who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? It is the one at the table, isn't it? But I'm among you as one who serves.

27τίς γὰρ μείζων ὁ ἀνακείμενος ἢ ὁ διακονῶν οὐχὶ ὁ ἀνακείμενος ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν εἰμι ὡς ὁ διακονῶν

28"You are the ones who have always stood by me in my trials.

28Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου

29And I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred a kingdom on me,

29κἀγὼ διατίθεμαι ὑμῖν καθὼς διέθετό μοι ὁ Πατήρ μου βασιλείαν

30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit down on thrones to govern the twelve tribes of Israel."

30ἵνα ἔσθητε καὶ πίνητε ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης μου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου καὶ καθήσεσθε ἐπὶ θρόνων τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς κρίνοντες τοῦ Ἰσραήλ

31"Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat,

31Σίμων Σίμων ἰδοὺ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐξῃτήσατο ὑμᾶς τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον

32but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail. When you have come back, you must strengthen your brothers."

32ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ ἡ πίστις σου καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στήρισον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου

33Peter told him, "Lord, I am ready to go even to prison and to die with you!"

33Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Κύριε μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι

34But Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me."

34Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Λέγω σοι Πέτρε οὐ φωνήσει σήμερον ἀλέκτωρ ἕως τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ 〈μὴ〉 εἰδέναι

35Then Jesus asked his disciples, "When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing at all."

35Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὅτε ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς ἄτερ βαλλαντίου καὶ πήρας καὶ ὑποδημάτων μή τινος ὑστερήσατε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Οὐθενός

36Then he told them, "But now whoever has a wallet must take it along, and his traveling bag, too. And the one who has no sword must sell his coat and buy one.

36Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἀλλὰ νῦν ὁ ἔχων βαλλάντιον ἀράτω ὁμοίως καὶ πήραν καὶ ὁ μὴ ἔχων πωλησάτω τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀγορασάτω μάχαιραν

37Because I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was counted among the criminals.' Indeed, what is written about me must be fulfilled."

37λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ γεγραμμένον δεῖ τελεσθῆναι ἐν ἐμοί Τό Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη καὶ γὰρ τὸ περὶ ἐμοῦ τέλος ἔχει

38So they said, "Lord, look! Here are two swords." He answered them, "Enough of that!"

38Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κύριε ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε δύο Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἱκανόν ἐστιν

39Then he left and went to the Mount of Olives, as usual. The disciples went with him.

39Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ ἔθος εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἠκολούθησαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταί

40When he arrived, he told them, "Keep on praying that you may not be tempted."

40γενόμενος δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Προσεύχεσθε μὴ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πειρασμόν

41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray,

41Καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπεσπάσθη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λίθου βολήν καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύχετο

42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."

42λέγων Πάτερ εἰ βούλει παρένεγκε τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ πλὴν μὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν γινέσθω

43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

43Ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος ἀπ’ (τοῦ) οὐρανοῦ ἐνισχύων αὐτόν

44In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like large drops of blood falling on the ground.

44καὶ γενόμενος ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ ἐκτενέστερον προσηύχετο καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ ἱδρὼς αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ θρόμβοι αἵματος καταβαίνοντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν

45When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow.

45Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς προσευχῆς ἐλθὼν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εὗρεν κοιμωμένους αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης

46He asked them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and keep on praying that you may not be tempted."

46καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί καθεύδετε ἀναστάντες προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν

47While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came close to Jesus to kiss him.

47Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ ὄχλος καὶ ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα προήρχετο αὐτούς καὶ ἤγγισεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ φιλῆσαι αὐτόν

48But Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

48Ἰησοῦς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰούδα φιλήματι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως

49When those who were around Jesus saw what was about to take place, they asked, "Lord, should we attack with our swords?"

49Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ

50Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.

50καὶ ἐπάταξεν εἷς τις ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τὸν δοῦλον καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ τὸ δεξιόν

51But Jesus said, "No more of this!" So he touched the wounded man's ear and healed him.

51Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐᾶτε ἕως τούτου καὶ ἁψάμενος τοῦ ὠτίου ἰάσατο αὐτόν

52Then Jesus told the high priests, the Temple police, and the elders, who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit?

52Εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων

53While I was with you day after day in the Temple, you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns!"

53καθ’ ἡμέραν ὄντος μου μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ ἐμέ ἀλλ’ αὕτη ἐστὶν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους

54Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.

54Συλλαβόντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἤγαγον καὶ εἰσήγαγον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει μακρόθεν

55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them.

55Περιαψάντων δὲ πῦρ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ συνκαθισάντων ἐκάθητο ὁ Πέτρος μέσος αὐτῶν

56A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him, and said, "This man was with him, too."

56ἰδοῦσα δὲ αὐτὸν παιδίσκη τις καθήμενον πρὸς τὸ φῶς καὶ ἀτενίσασα αὐτῷ εἶπεν Καὶ οὗτος σὺν αὐτῷ ἦν

57But he denied it, "I don't know him, woman!" he responded.

57Ὁ δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν γύναι

58A little later, a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them, too." But Peter said, "Mister, I am not!"

58Καὶ μετὰ βραχὺ ἕτερος ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἔφη Καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ εἰμί

59About an hour later, another man emphatically asserted, "This man was certainly with him, because he is a Galilean!"

59Καὶ διαστάσης ὡσεὶ ὥρας μιᾶς ἄλλος τις διϊσχυρίζετο λέγων Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καὶ οὗτος μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἦν καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν

60But Peter said, "Mister, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

60Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ οἶδα ὃ λέγεις καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔτι λαλοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ

61Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the word from the Lord, and how he had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

61καὶ στραφεὶς ὁ Κύριος ἐνέβλεψεν τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ ὑπεμνήσθη ὁ Πέτρος τοῦ λόγου τοῦ Κυρίου ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι σήμερον ἀπαρνήσῃ με τρίς

62So he went outside and cried bitterly.

62καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς

63Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him.

63Καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ συνέχοντες αὐτὸν ἐνέπαιζον αὐτῷ δέροντες

64They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, "Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?"

64καὶ περικαλύψαντες αὐτὸν ⧼ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ⧽ ἐπηρώτων λέγοντες Προφήτευσον τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε

65And they kept insulting him in many other ways.

65καὶ ἕτερα πολλὰ βλασφημοῦντες ἔλεγον εἰς αὐτόν

66As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council.

66Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα συνήχθη τὸ πρεσβυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ ἀρχιερεῖς τε καὶ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν λέγοντες

67They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe me,

67Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός εἰπὸν ἡμῖν Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐὰν ὑμῖν εἴπω οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε

68and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me.

68ἐὰν δὲ ἐρωτήσω οὐ μὴ ἀποκριθῆτε

69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

69ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν δὲ ἔσται ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ Θεοῦ

70Then they all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You said it—I AM."

70Εἶπαν δὲ πάντες Σὺ οὖν εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ Ὁ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔφη Ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι

71"Why do we need any more testimony?" they asked. "We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!"

71Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί ἔτι ἔχομεν μαρτυρίας χρείαν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἠκούσαμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
