When morning came, all the high priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put him to death.
They bound him with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the governor.2καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι
Then Judas, who had betrayed him, regretted what had happened when he saw that Jesus was condemned. He brought the 30 pieces of silver back to the high priests and elders,
saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they replied, "What do we care? Attend to that yourself." 4λέγων Ἥμαρτον παραδοὺς αἷμα ἀθῷον Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί πρὸς ἡμᾶς σὺ ὄψῃ
Then he flung the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, went outside, ran away, and hanged himself.5Καὶ ῥίψας τὰ ἀργύρια εἰς τὸν ναὸν ἀνεχώρησεν καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπήγξατο
The high priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put this into the Temple treasury, because it is blood money." 6Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς λαβόντες τὰ ἀργύρια εἶπαν Οὐκ ἔξεστιν βαλεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν κορβανᾶν ἐπεὶ τιμὴ αἵματός ἐστιν
So they decided to use the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial ground for foreigners.
That is why that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then what had been declared through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled when he said, "They took the 30 pieces of silver, the value of the man on whom a price had been set by the Israelis,9τότε ἐπληρώθη τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος Καὶ ἔλαβον τὰ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ τετιμημένου ὃν ἐτιμήσαντο ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." 10καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν τοῦ κεραμέως καθὰ συνέταξέν μοι Κύριος
Meanwhile, Jesus was made to stand in front of the governor. The governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so."11 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἡγεμὼν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
While Jesus was being accused by the high priests and elders, he made no reply.
Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear how many charges they're bringing against you?" 13Τότε λέγει αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Οὐκ ἀκούεις πόσα σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
But Jesus did not reply at all, so that the governor was very surprised.14Καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ πρὸς οὐδὲ ἓν ῥῆμα ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν ἡγεμόνα λίαν
At every festival the governor had a custom of releasing to the crowd any prisoner whom they wanted.
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.16εἶχον δὲ τότε δέσμιον ἐπίσημον λεγόμενον ‹Ἰησοῦν› Βαραββᾶν
So when the people had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which man do you want me to release for you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called 'the Messiah'?"17συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ‹Ἰησοῦν τὸν› Βαραββᾶν Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν
He did this because he knew that they had handed him over out of jealousy.18ᾔδει γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παρέδωκαν αὐτόν
While he was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him a message that said, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, because today I have suffered terribly due to a dream I had about him."19Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν γυνὴ αὐτοῦ λέγουσα Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ τῷ δικαίῳ ἐκείνῳ πολλὰ γὰρ ἔπαθον σήμερον κατ’ ὄναρ δι’ αὐτόν
But the high priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to demand that Jesus be put to death.
So the governor asked them, "Which of the two men do you want me to release for you?" "Barabbas!" they replied.21Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τίνα θέλετε ἀπὸ τῶν δύο ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τὸν Βαραββᾶν
Pilate asked them, "Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"22Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τί οὖν ποιήσω Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν Λέγουσιν πάντες Σταυρωθήτω
He asked, "What has he done wrong?" But they kept shouting louder and louder, "Let him be crucified!"23 δὲ ἔφη Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραζον λέγοντες Σταυρωθήτω
Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was about to break out instead. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Attend to that yourselves."24Ἰδὼν δὲ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ἀπέναντι* τοῦ ὄχλου λέγων Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τούτου ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε
All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and our children!" 25Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πᾶς λαὸς εἶπεν Τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν
Then he released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.26Τότε ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the imperial headquarters and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
Twisting some thorns into a victor's crown, they placed it on his head and put a stick in his right hand. They knelt down in front of him and began making fun of him, saying, "Long live the king of the Jews!" 29καὶ πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ κάλαμον ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ καὶ γονυπετήσαντες ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Then they spit on him and took the stick and hit him repeatedly on his head.
When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.31Καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν χλαμύδα καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σταυρῶσαι
As they were leaving, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry Jesus' cross.
When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means "Skull Place"), 33Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Γολγοθᾶ ἐστιν κρανίου τόπος λεγόμενος
they offered him a drink of wine mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it. 34ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν
After they had crucified him, they determined who would get his clothes by throwing dice for them.35Σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον {ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ προφήτου Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον}
Then they sat down there and continued guarding him.
Above his head they placed the charge against him. It read, "This is Jesus, the king of the Jews."37καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην ΟΥΤΟΣ* ΕΣΤΙΝ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
At that time two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left.
Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, 39Οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
and saying, "You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—save yourself! If you're the Son of God, come down from the cross!"40καὶ λέγοντες καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν σῶσον σεαυτόν εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
In the same way the high priests, along with the scribes and elders, were also making fun of him.
"He saved others but can't save himself! He is the king of Israel. Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 42Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
He trusts in God. Let God rescue him, if he wants to do so now. After all, he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"43πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν Θεόν ῥυσάσθω νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι Υἱός
In a similar way, the bandits who were being crucified with him kept insulting him.44Τὸ δ’ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.45Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
About three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, eli, lema sabachthani?", which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 46περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων Ἠλὶ* ἠλὶ* λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι* τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Θεέ μου θεέ μου ἵνα‿ τί με ἐγκατέλιπες
When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah."47Τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος
So one of the men ran off at once, took a sponge, and soaked it in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink.48καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν
But the others kept saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah will come and save him." 49Οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἔλεγον* Ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων αὐτόν (ἄλλος δὲ λαβὼν λόγχην ἔνυξεν αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευράν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὕδωρ καὶ αἷμα)
Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice again and died.50 δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα
Suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, rocks were split open, 51Καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο καὶ γῆ ἐσείσθη καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν
tombs were opened, and many saints who had died were brought back to life.
After his resurrection, they came out of their tombs, went into the Holy City, and appeared to many people.53καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς
When the centurion and those guarding Jesus with him saw the earthquake and the other things that were taking place, they were terrified and said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"54 δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ γενόμενα* ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς ἦν οὗτος
Now many women were also there, watching from a distance. They had accompanied Jesus from Galilee and had ministered to him.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.56ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία Μαγδαληνή καὶ Μαρία τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου
Later that evening, a rich man arrived from Arimathea. His name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be done.
So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.
Then he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. After rolling a large stone across the door of the tomb, he left, 60καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ καινῷ αὐτοῦ μνημείῳ ἐλατόμησεν ἐν τῇ πέτρᾳ καὶ προσκυλίσας λίθον μέγαν τῇ θύρᾳ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπῆλθεν
but Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained there, sitting in front of the tomb.61Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ Μαριὰμ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἄλλη Μαρία καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου
The following day (that is, after the Day of Preparation), the high priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate 62Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἥτις ἐστὶν μετὰ τὴν Παρασκευήν συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς Πιλᾶτον
and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said while he was still alive, 'I will be raised after three days.' 63λέγοντες Κύριε ἐμνήσθημεν ὅτι ἐκεῖνος πλάνος εἶπεν ἔτι ζῶν Μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐγείρομαι
Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, or his disciples may go and steal him and then tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception would be worse than the first one."64κέλευσον οὖν ἀσφαλισθῆναι τὸν τάφον ἕως τῆς τρίτης ἡμέρας μή‿ ποτε ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ‹αὐτοῦ› κλέψωσιν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴπωσιν τῷ λαῷ Ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ ἔσται ἐσχάτη πλάνη χείρων τῆς πρώτης
Pilate told them, "You have a military guard. Go and make the tomb as secure as you know how." 65Ἔφη αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Ἔχετε κουστωδίαν ὑπάγετε ἀσφαλίσασθε ὡς οἴδατε
So they went and secured the tomb by putting a seal on the stone in the presence of the guards.66οἱ δὲ πορευθέντες ἠσφαλίσαντο τὸν τάφον σφραγίσαντες τὸν λίθον μετὰ τῆς κουστωδίας
