Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death;1Πρωΐας δὲ γενομένης συμβούλιον ἔλαβον πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὥστε θανατῶσαι αὐτόν
and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.2καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,3Τότε ἰδὼν Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς* αὐτὸν ὅτι κατεκρίθη μεταμεληθεὶς ἔστρεψεν τὰ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ πρεσβυτέροις
saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!"4λέγων Ἥμαρτον παραδοὺς αἷμα ἀθῷον Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί πρὸς ἡμᾶς σὺ ὄψῃ
And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.5Καὶ ῥίψας τὰ ἀργύρια εἰς τὸν ναὸν ἀνεχώρησεν καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπήγξατο
The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood."6Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς λαβόντες τὰ ἀργύρια εἶπαν Οὐκ ἔξεστιν βαλεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν κορβανᾶν ἐπεὶ τιμὴ αἵματός ἐστιν
And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers.7συμβούλιον δὲ λαβόντες ἠγόρασαν ἐξ αὐτῶν τὸν ἀγρὸν τοῦ κεραμέως εἰς ταφὴν τοῖς ξένοις
For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.8διὸ ἐκλήθη ἀγρὸς ἐκεῖνος Ἀγρὸς αἵματος ἕως τῆς σήμερον
Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel;9τότε ἐπληρώθη τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος Καὶ ἔλαβον τὰ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ τετιμημένου ὃν ἐτιμήσαντο ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ
AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME."10καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτὰ εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν τοῦ κεραμέως καθὰ συνέταξέν μοι Κύριος
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "It is as you say."11 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἡγεμὼν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.12Καὶ ἐν τῷ κατηγορεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο
Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"13Τότε λέγει αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Οὐκ ἀκούεις πόσα σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.14Καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ πρὸς οὐδὲ ἓν ῥῆμα ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν ἡγεμόνα λίαν
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted.15Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν εἰώθει ἡγεμὼν ἀπολύειν ἕνα τῷ ὄχλῳ δέσμιον ὃν ἤθελον
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.16εἶχον δὲ τότε δέσμιον ἐπίσημον λεγόμενον ‹Ἰησοῦν› Βαραββᾶν
So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"17συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ‹Ἰησοῦν τὸν› Βαραββᾶν Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν
For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.18ᾔδει γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παρέδωκαν αὐτόν
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him."19Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν γυνὴ αὐτοῦ λέγουσα Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ τῷ δικαίῳ ἐκείνῳ πολλὰ γὰρ ἔπαθον σήμερον κατ’ ὄναρ δι’ αὐτόν
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.20Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἔπεισαν τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα αἰτήσωνται τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν ἀπολέσωσιν
But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."21Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἡγεμὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τίνα θέλετε ἀπὸ τῶν δύο ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τὸν Βαραββᾶν
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Crucify Him!"22Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τί οὖν ποιήσω Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν Λέγουσιν πάντες Σταυρωθήτω
And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the more, saying, "Crucify Him!"23 δὲ ἔφη Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραζον λέγοντες Σταυρωθήτω
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves."24Ἰδὼν δὲ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ἀπέναντι* τοῦ ὄχλου λέγων Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τούτου ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε
And all the people said, "His blood shall be on us and on our children!"25Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πᾶς λαὸς εἶπεν Τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἡμῶν
Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.26Τότε ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.27Τότε οἱ στρατιῶται τοῦ ἡγεμόνος παραλαβόντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον συνήγαγον ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.28καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν χλαμύδα κοκκίνην περιέθηκαν αὐτῷ
And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"29καὶ πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ κάλαμον ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ καὶ γονυπετήσαντες ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.30καὶ ἐμπτύσαντες εἰς αὐτὸν ἔλαβον τὸν κάλαμον καὶ ἔτυπτον εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ
After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.31Καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν χλαμύδα καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σταυρῶσαι
As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.32Ἐξερχόμενοι δὲ εὗρον ἄνθρωπον Κυρηναῖον ὀνόματι Σίμωνα τοῦτον ἠγγάρευσαν ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,33Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Γολγοθᾶ ἐστιν κρανίου τόπος λεγόμενος
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.34ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πιεῖν οἶνον μετὰ χολῆς μεμιγμένον καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκ ἠθέλησεν πιεῖν
And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots.35Σταυρώσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον {ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ προφήτου Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον}
And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.36καὶ καθήμενοι ἐτήρουν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ
And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."37καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τὴν αἰτίαν αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένην ΟΥΤΟΣ* ΕΣΤΙΝ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.38Τότε σταυροῦνται σὺν αὐτῷ δύο λῃσταί εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων
And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads39Οἱ δὲ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν
and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."40καὶ λέγοντες καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις οἰκοδομῶν σῶσον σεαυτόν εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,41Ὁμοίως ‹καὶ› οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων ἔλεγον
"He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.42Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ καὶ πιστεύσομεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
"HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"43πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τὸν Θεόν ῥυσάσθω νῦν εἰ θέλει αὐτόν εἶπεν γὰρ ὅτι Θεοῦ εἰμι Υἱός
The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.44Τὸ δ’ αὐτὸ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ συσταυρωθέντες σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.45Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας σκότος ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"46περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων Ἠλὶ* ἠλὶ* λεμὰ σαβαχθάνι* τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Θεέ μου θεέ μου ἵνα‿ τί με ἐγκατέλιπες
And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah."47Τινὲς δὲ τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ οὗτος
Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.48καὶ εὐθέως δραμὼν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ λαβὼν σπόγγον πλήσας τε ὄξους καὶ περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν
But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him."49Οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἔλεγον* Ἄφες ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας σώσων αὐτόν (ἄλλος δὲ λαβὼν λόγχην ἔνυξεν αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευράν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὕδωρ καὶ αἷμα)
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.50 δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.51Καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω εἰς δύο καὶ γῆ ἐσείσθη καὶ αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν
The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;52καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα ἀνεῴχθησαν καὶ πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ἠγέρθησαν
and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.53καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκ τῶν μνημείων μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἐνεφανίσθησαν πολλοῖς
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"54 δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ γενόμενα* ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς ἦν οὗτος
Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him.55Ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ γυναῖκες πολλαὶ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι αἵτινες ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας διακονοῦσαι αὐτῷ
Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.56ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία Μαγδαληνή καὶ Μαρία τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.57Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἦλθεν ἄνθρωπος πλούσιος ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας τοὔνομα Ἰωσήφ ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἐμαθητεύθη τῷ Ἰησοῦ
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.58οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τότε Πιλᾶτος ἐκέλευσεν ἀποδοθῆναι
And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,59καὶ λαβὼν τὸ σῶμα Ἰωσὴφ ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ ἐν σινδόνι καθαρᾷ
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.60καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ καινῷ αὐτοῦ μνημείῳ ἐλατόμησεν ἐν τῇ πέτρᾳ καὶ προσκυλίσας λίθον μέγαν τῇ θύρᾳ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπῆλθεν
And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.61Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ Μαριὰμ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἄλλη Μαρία καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου
Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,62Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἥτις ἐστὶν μετὰ τὴν Παρασκευήν συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς Πιλᾶτον
and said, "Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I am to rise again.'63λέγοντες Κύριε ἐμνήσθημεν ὅτι ἐκεῖνος πλάνος εἶπεν ἔτι ζῶν Μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐγείρομαι
"Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."64κέλευσον οὖν ἀσφαλισθῆναι τὸν τάφον ἕως τῆς τρίτης ἡμέρας μή‿ ποτε ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ‹αὐτοῦ› κλέψωσιν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴπωσιν τῷ λαῷ Ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ ἔσται ἐσχάτη πλάνη χείρων τῆς πρώτης
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how."65Ἔφη αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Ἔχετε κουστωδίαν ὑπάγετε ἀσφαλίσασθε ὡς οἴδατε
And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.66οἱ δὲ πορευθέντες ἠσφαλίσαντο τὸν τάφον σφραγίσαντες τὸν λίθον μετὰ τῆς κουστωδίας
