The Mission of John the Baptist
(Isaiah 40:1-5; Matthew 3:1-12; Luke 3:1-20; John 1:19-28)

1Ἀρχὴ (The beginning) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), Υἱοῦ (Son) Θεοῦ (of God).a 2Καθὼς (As) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἠσαΐᾳ (Isaiah) τῷ (the) προφήτῃ (prophet):

“Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀποστέλλω (I send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (face) σου (of You),

ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You).”b

3“Φωνὴ (The voice) βοῶντος (of one crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness),

‘Ἑτοιμάσατε (Prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord),

εὐθείας (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τὰς (the) τρίβους (paths) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’”c

4Ἐγένετο (Came) Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (-) βαπτίζων (baptizing) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) [καὶ] (and) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) βάπτισμα (a baptism) μετανοίας (of repentance) εἰς (for) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins). 5καὶ (And) ἐξεπορεύετο (were going out) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) Ἰουδαία (of Judea) χώρα (region), καὶ (and) οἱ (-) Ἱεροσολυμῖται (of Jerusalem), πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (river), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).

6Καὶ (And) ἦν (was) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) ἐνδεδυμένος (clothed in) τρίχας (hair) καμήλου (of a camel), καὶ (and) ζώνην (a belt) δερματίνην (of leather) περὶ (around) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (waist) αὐτοῦ (of him); καὶ (and) ἔσθων (he is eating) ἀκρίδας (locusts) καὶ (and) μέλι (honey) ἄγριον (wild). 7καὶ (And) ἐκήρυσσεν (he was preaching), λέγων (saying), “Ἔρχεται (He comes) ὁ (who) ἰσχυρότερός (is mightier) μου (than I) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me), οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (sufficient), κύψας (having stooped down), λῦσαι (to untie) τὸν (the) ἱμάντα (strap) τῶν (of the) ὑποδημάτων (sandals) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 8ἐγὼ (I) ἐβάπτισα (baptized) ὑμᾶς (you) ὕδατι (with water);d αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) βαπτίσει (will baptize) ὑμᾶς (you) ‹ἐν› (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).”

9Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days), ἦλθεν (that came) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲτ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίσθη (was baptized) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Ἰορδάνην (Jordan) ὑπὸ (by) Ἰωάννου (John). 10καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀναβαίνων (going up) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water), εἶδεν (he saw) σχιζομένους (tearing open) τοὺς (the) οὐρανοὺς (heavens), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὡς (as) περιστερὰν (a dove) καταβαῖνον (descending) εἰς (upon) αὐτόν (Him). 11καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐγένετο (came) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) οὐρανῶν (heavens): “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) σοὶ (You) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased).”

The Temptation of Jesus

12Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκβάλλει (drives out) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἔρημον (wilderness). 13καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) ἡμέρας (days), πειραζόμενος (being tempted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (Satan). καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) θηρίων (wild animals); καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) διηκόνουν (were ministering) αὐτῷ (to Him).

19Καὶ (And) προβὰς (having gone on) ὀλίγον (a little), εἶδεν (He saw) Ἰάκωβον (James) τὸν (the son) τοῦ (-) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) αὐτοὺς (they) ἐν (were in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat) καταρτίζοντας (adjusting) τὰ (the) δίκτυα (nets). 20καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐκάλεσεν (He called) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἀφέντες (having left) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτῶν (of them) Ζεβεδαῖον (Zebedee) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μισθωτῶν (hired servants), ἀπῆλθον (they went away) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (Him).

Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit

21Καὶ (And) εἰσπορεύονται (they go) εἰς (into) Καφαρναούμ (Capernaum); καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths), εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching). 22καὶ (And) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (they were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἦν (He was) γὰρ (for) διδάσκων (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ὡς (as) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχων (having), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes).

23Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐν (with) πνεύματι (a spirit) ἀκαθάρτῳ (unclean), καὶ (and) ἀνέκραξεν (he cried out), 24λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) ἡμῖν (to us) καὶ (and) σοί (to You), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Ναζαρηνέ (of Nazareth)? ἦλθες (Did You come) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy) ἡμᾶς (us)? οἶδά (I know) σε (You) τίς (who) εἶ (are), ὁ (the) Ἅγιος (Holy One) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)!”

25Καὶ (And) ἐπετίμησεν (rebuked) αὐτῷ (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ‹λέγων› (saying) “Φιμώθητι (Be silent), καὶ (and) ἔξελθε (come forth) ἐξ (out of) αὐτοῦ (him)!” 26καὶ (And) σπαράξαν (having thrown into convulsions) αὐτὸν (him) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τὸ (-) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean), καὶ (and) φωνῆσαν (having cried) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), ἐξῆλθεν (it came forth) ἐξ (out of) αὐτοῦ (him).

27Καὶ (And) ἐθαμβήθησαν (were astonished) ἅπαντες (all), ὥστε (so as) ‹συζητεῖν (to question) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτοὺς› (themselves), λέγοντας (saying), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) τοῦτο (this) διδαχὴ (teaching) καινή (new)? κατ’ (With) ἐξουσίαν (authority), καὶ (even) τοῖς (the) πνεύμασι (spirits) τοῖς (-) ἀκαθάρτοις (unclean) ἐπιτάσσει (He commands), καὶ (and) ὑπακούουσιν (they obey) αὐτῷ (Him)!” 28καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ἡ (the) ἀκοὴ (news) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εὐθὺς (immediately), πανταχοῦ (everywhere) εἰς (into) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) περίχωρον (surrounding region) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).

The Leper's Prayer

40Καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) λεπρὸς (a leper),e παρακαλῶν (imploring) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) γονυπετῶν (kneeling down to Him), [καὶ] (and) λέγων (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὅτι (-), “Ἐὰν (If) θέλῃς (You are willing), δύνασαί (You are able) με (me) καθαρίσαι (to cleanse).”

41Καὶ (And) σπλαγχνισθεὶς (having been moved with compassion),f ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἥψατο (He touched him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Θέλω (I am willing); καθαρίσθητι (be you cleansed).”

42Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀπῆλθεν (departed) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) ἡ (the) λέπρα (leprosy), καὶ (and) ἐκαθαρίσθη* (he was cleansed).

43Καὶ (And) ἐμβριμησάμενος (having sternly warned) αὐτῷ (him), εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐξέβαλεν (He sent away) αὐτόν (him). 44καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὅρα (See that) μηδενὶ (nothing) μηδὲν (to none) εἴπῃς (you speak). ἀλλὰ (But) ὕπαγε (go), σεαυτὸν (yourself) δεῖξον (show) τῷ (to the) ἱερεῖ (priest), καὶ (and) προσένεγκε (offer) περὶ (for) τοῦ (the) καθαρισμοῦ (cleansing) σου (of you) ἃ (what) προσέταξεν (commanded) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them).”

45Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out), ἤρξατο (he began) κηρύσσειν (to proclaim) πολλὰ (much) καὶ (and) διαφημίζειν (to spread abroad) τὸν (the) λόγον (matter), ὥστε (so that) μηκέτι (no longer) αὐτὸν (He) δύνασθαι (was able) φανερῶς (openly) εἰς (into the) πόλιν (city) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter); ἀλλ’ (but) ἔξω (out) ἐπ’ (in) ἐρήμοις (solitary) τόποις (places) ἦν (He was), καὶ (and) ἤρχοντο (they were coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) πάντοθεν (from every quarter).
